The Baptist Church in Diseworth
SynopsisThe history of the Baptist Church in Diseworth over 250 years. This 96 page book records the 250 years of the Baptist Church in the village, from the days when the dissenting ministers met in a weaver's cottage in the mid 1700's up to the disastrous flooding in November 2000 that resulted in the closure of the church. The information comes mostly from the Minute Books, faithfully recorded by the members over the years, and offers an insight into the efforts of a small number of Baptists to maintain their church, instruct their children and celebrate the church festivals in their style. The book commences with growth of the Baptist Movement in the East Midlands and the origin of the small Baptist chapel in Diseworth. Documents from the Baptist Union show the names of the early Baptists, the Sabbath School books list the names of the young people and the Cash Books indicate the struggle to maintain the church and churchyard while assisting other Baptists both at home and abroad. Scanned pictures illustrate the text. The book concludes with the hope for the future of the church and tells of the maintenance of the churchyard for posterity.
